    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Robert Woodings t/a The Hair Lounge are looking to take on 2 new apprentices to expand their busy team at their salon in Kingsthorpe, Northampton.

Your duties will involve all aspects of training towards gaining an NVQ Intermediate Level in Hairdressing.

Initially you will be assisting the stylists, shampooing, making drinks for customers, sweeping up and ensuring work areas are kept clean and tidy. You may also be required to undertake some reception duties, such as meeting and greeting clients, answering the phone and booking appointments. As your training progresses you will become more involved in complex processes such as colouring, cutting and styling hair.

Desired skills

You must be motivated, keen to make a start in your hairdressing career, have good communication skills, be able to talk to all types of people and have a polite telephone manner.

Personal qualities

You must be creative, enthusiastic and willing to learn, reliable, practical and helpful. Due to working in the fashion industry the salon is ideally looking for someone who is well presented and interested in current fashion trends, as the hairdressing industry is constantly changing in fashion trends, new products, techniques and technology.

Qualifications required

No formal qualifications are specified but you must have studied to GCSE or equivalent level in Maths and English Language.

Future prospects

Once you have achieved your Intermediate level apprenticeship in Hairdressing there is always the opportunity of progressing onto an Advanced level apprenticeship in Hairdressing.

Things to consider

This role will involve being on your feet for the majority of your working day. Due to the nature of the business you will be required to work Saturdays, you may also be required to work some late evenings within your working week. The salon opening times are: Tuesday & Wednesday 10 - 8pm Thursday 10 - 2pm Friday 9 - 6pm Saturday 9 - 4pm
