    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

As a hairdressing apprentice you have an important role within the team, being one of first people your clients will be introduced to, you will be able to demonstrate your customer service skills by meeting and greeting and looking after your clients and supporting the stylist throughout the day making sure that your clients have a great experience during their visit. 

Your role will be to assist the hair stylists, gain experience and learn the practical and theory of hairdressing whilst training towards your apprenticeship programme.

A normal day would include:

  • Meeting and greeting clients on arrival 
  • Gowning clients
  • Making Refreshments
  • Shampooing, conditioning and rinsing hair, rinsing off colour treatments
  • Assisting Stylists
  • Salon Housekeeping

How you will progress:

  • With training you will learn to blow dry, style, dress, colour and cut hair and be given the opportunity to practice your skills in salon where you will be encouraged to bring in models to extend your skills and become qualified at Level 2 NVQ.
  • Once you have completed your Level 2 qualification, you can progress onto a NVQ Level 3 advanced apprenticeship in Hair where you will continue to learn new skills and techniques.
  • You will be fully supported throughout your training from our highly qualified team of hairdressing experts who will help you succeed.

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
