Wages explained
The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

Working week

Monday - Friday Out of hours emergency response and winter maintenance duties are also part of the role.

What you'll be doing

As a Highways Maintenance Apprentice, you will:

  • Deliver Highways works efficiently and safely for the local area.
  • Liaising with members of the client team and Public to ensure that the client’s needs are met.
  • Working as part of a team to deliver reactive, emergency and other types of highways works in all weathers.
  • Responsible for onsite Health and Safety at all times.
  • Assisting in the delivery of the annual winter maintenance programme (Sept – April).
  • Assist in maintenance of roads and motorways.
  • Assist in building/widening roads and motorways.
  • Painting road markings.
  • Gritting roads and clearing roads in Winter.
  • Out of Hours Standby (on a rota basis).

These Highways Apprentice roles will be based in:

Scratchwood (Borehamwood) , Leatherhead, Blunts Farm (Essex) and Swanley.

Qualifications required

Have a minimum of 3 GCSE’s A*- C (or equivalent) coupled with an interest in Highways Maintenance.

For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
