    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The role of Garden Adviser is based within our planteria area of our garden centres. You will be working within the outdoor team providing expert advice and guidance to our customers.

You will be responsible for generating and maximising sales whilst maintaining a high standard of merchandising standards and customer care.

  • Operating a cash till
  • Serving customers
  • Assist with planning, mounting, and maintaining displays and promotions
  • Involvement in promotional activity, including open evenings and demonstrations
  • Put out stock and assist in maintaining stock quality
  • Refresh displays, including facing up and tidying.

Qualifications required

Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A-E or 9-3 (or equivalent). Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.

Future prospects

At around day 500, you will be a fully qualified Garden Advisor level 2 with the potential to study for level 3, if you have shown the necessary commitment and desire to develop your career with us. The aim is for all our apprentices to become our future rising stars within the business.

Things to consider

The vacancy is based outdoors so the apprentice will be working in variable climates. The role is physical and involves manual working.

Training provider

Qualifications: Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner and Level 2 Certificate in Work Based Horticulture

College Attendance: There is no regular college attendance as the qualifications are delivered entirely in the workplace.

Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition, the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make regular contact and on-site visits.
