The Food and Drink industry is an exciting place to be a Maintenance Engineer.

Food and Drink Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineers will work with mechanical and electrical equipment plus highly automated programmable control systems.

Depending on the type of product and plant in the company, engineering activities carried out will include:

  • Routine maintenance
  • Fault finding and diagnosis
  • Testing and commissioning

They must ensure that maintenance activities contribute to optimising food and drink production levels.

Engineers must ensure that all maintenance activities are conducted safely, and practices comply with food safety legislation in this highly regulated industry. They must understand the key features of working with consumable products and how they this affects food industry maintenance practices.

Food and Drink Engineers will work autonomously, taking responsibility for their own tasks and also work effectively in teams.

Apprentices will be based at site but will attend Birmingham Metropolitan College for 3 x 6week blocks throughout the year . Accommodation will be provided.

Please note that you will be required to travel to Birmingham for 6 Week Blocks (Monday – Friday) for your technical training. There will be 3 blocks per year for 3 years. Your accommodation and travel will be covered by Tulip Foods Ltd.

Qualifications required

  • 5 GCSE qualifications at grade C or above including Maths and English or equivalent.
  • Maths must be a grade B or above.
  • Science would be an advantage.

On successful completion of apprenticeship full time employment will be offered with potential opportunities for growth within the company.

Things to consider

Training provider

During your Apprenticeship you will undertake a skills and qualifications that have been designed specifically for Engineering in the Food and Drink Industry.

Over the 4 years of your Apprenticeship at well as learning “on the job“ skills as at you place of work you will also spend time at Birmingham Metropolitan College(BMet) undertaking a Level 3 qualification in “Food and Drink Maintenance Engineering”.

Your personal skills and the way you develop throughout your apprenticeship will also be a key factor in your success and achievement; as such Tulip Food and BMet will fully support your efforts toward successful completion and ultimately full time employment as a qualified Food and Drink Maintenance Engineer.
