Healthcare Apprentice working within the Nursing home setting. Must be aged 18 years or older in order to provide care unsupervised. Responsibilities include:

Supporting the team and nursing staff with care for patients.

This involves supporting with

  • Personal care.
  • Mealtimes.
  • Ensuring a clean, safe and welcoming environment.
  • Supporting with treatment, emotional and wellbeing support.
  • Completing care-plan documents.
  • Supporting and working alongside the nursing and medical staff.
  • This role will involve supporting patients with end of life care.

Apprenticeships will undertake learning – including Health and Social Care Award level 2 and Functional skills Maths and English level1 (if required ) delivered by Colchester Institute using e-portfolio system.

Future prospects

On successful completion of apprenticeship placement, progression to full time employment to carer role may be possible.

Things to consider

Due to the nature of the role and working hours candidates must be 18 years or older. This vacancy may include attending to personal care needs and supporting of medical treatment. This role is physically and mentally demanding and will involve lone working. From 1st October 2016 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From April 2017 this rises to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. A 33 bedded nursing care home, Cheviot Nursing Home, is set in peaceful surroundings in Lexden, near the centre of Colchester. It is a large and gracious house, which opened as a nursing home in 1989 and is well equipped to meet the needs of all our residents. All the bedrooms are en-suite, some with French windows leading straight into the lovely garden.

The course is aimed at learners aged 16 or over who wish to gain employment within the Health and Social Care sector to include, carer or support worker. Completion of this qualification  could then lead to progression to a senior care worker within your chosen setting.

The course combines developing your practical and theoretical skills, together with experience gained in the workplace. Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2. Units include:
