Country Skittles is seeking an enthusiastic individual, with a passion for food, to join their professional team as an Apprentice to the Head Chef. As part of the team of chefs at Country Skittles, you would work within a team of around 20 people and a chef/cooking staff of 3 or 4 people. You would be trained in all aspects of cooking meals in a busy kitchen, all aspects of Health and Safety in the workplace and use of catering equipment in our busy kitchen. As your skills develop so will your duties and responsibilities.

These will include:

  • Working under the Head Chef in creating dishes and meals
  • Inspecting and ensuring the quality of ingredients
  • Preparing ingredients for meals
  • Measuring ingredients and portion sizes
  • Giving input to menus and specials
  • Work to improve the quality of dishes
  • Helping with deliveries and storage of stock
  • Ensuring good hygiene and health and safety at all times

Qualifications required

GCSE or equivalent Grade D or above in Maths and English is preferred, but not essential for the right applicant.

Future prospects

There is scope for an increase in the hourly rate after 4 months successful training, with a further review after 8 months. There is also a very high chance of full time employment at the end of the successful apprenticeship.

Things to consider

There is no public transport in the evenings that is suitable for people working at Skittles. Therefore, it is necessary to have your own transport, or to have very willing parents or friends who are prepared to provide lifts. From April 1st 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the National Minimum Wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.

About the employer

Country Skittles is an entertainment centre with a busy kitchen serving freshly cooked food 363 days of the year! We have bowling alleys, a bar and various other activities, but the main business is the restaurant. We have customers of all ages and backgrounds, and that makes each shift different! During the summer months we attract a lot of tourists – especially when it’s raining! We have a close team of around 20 people working here, and it is a friendly, fun place to work.
