    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The day to day duties of an Apprentice Nursery Nurse include, shadowing the room leader of the specific room in order to have a constant mentor throughout their time. Daily duties include helping to set up activities and also taking part in the activities alongside the children and other staff in the room. You will also have the opportunity to begin to plan activities of your choice to meet an individual child's interest. Communicating with parents as children are dropped off and picked up, and general cleaning and tidying up throughout the day to maintain a safe and stimulating environment for the children.

The working hours are 37.5 hours over Monday to Friday.

We have a few bus stops within a 4 minute walk, one on Gibbins Road and a few on the A38 Bristol Road and the A4040. We are within a 15 minute walk to Selly Oak Station.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

Basic knowledge of childcare and the EYFS. Have good communication skills and have a good level of Literacy and Maths skills.

Personal qualities

Must have a passion for childcare and be eager to learn. Must also be able to follow routine but also improvise when needed in order to be flexible enough to meet the children';s needs. You will be supported throughout, have your own personal mentor within your room and regular meetings with management to ensure you are comfortable and supported in everything you will be asked to do.

Qualifications required

There are no specific qualifications needed for this apprenticeship but a good level of Maths and English would be supportive to the job role. Full training will be provided.

Future prospects

The future prospects could include further development and education within the nursery. This could be progression from level 2 to level 3 and could also include training such as safeguarding, child development and creating enabling environments. There is plenty of scope for professional development.

Selly Oak Tree Day Nursery Ltd is a small family run day nursery which caters for children from the ages of 3 months to 5 years old. We have 3 rooms (Babies, Toddlers and Preschool) and each room has a room leader that mentors and teachers any new staff coming into their room. We have a lovely relaxed, friendly, home-from-home atmosphere with a range of resources and daily activities to challenge the children';s skills and abilities. We are looking for an apprentice to share in our passion for a high standard of teaching and learning. We will have another nursery opening at the end of the year which creates fantastic opportunities for new staff. We have had lots of successful apprentices 2 of which are now room leaders and another a designated person for fire safety and risk assessments.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is �3.40 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
