The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Intermediate Level Apprenticeship
This is an opportunity to join the team at Tamar View Nurseries and Garden Centre to work in their restaurant. You will begin by learning all aspects of health and safety in the kitchen, the cleaning requirements and basic food preparation. As your skills grow you will have increased responsibility preparing food such as fresh salads, sandwiches, hot meals to include breakfasts and meals from our daily specials board. You will learn how to bake cakes and make desserts.
This is no ordinary chef role as you will also be dealing with customers on a face to face basis ensuring they have an enjoyable experience in the restaurant, assisting with food service at busy times. This is a great position to learn lots of practical skills in the kitchen and gain experience dealing with customers. You will be required to attend college one day a week where you will work towards your NVQ qualification.
Requirements and prospects
Our ideal candidate has great communication and customer service skills so you are able to deal with customers and colleagues in a friendly and polite manner. You also have good organisational skills so you can prioritise tasks, keep the kitchen tidy and always arrive for work and college on time.
Our ideal apprentice is looking to work as part of a team, has a sense of humour and has a polite and friendly approach. You share ideas and you can take feedback on your performance as you know this will help you improve. You can stay calm under pressure as we can become very busy at times, and you are physically able to cope with the demands of the role as we often have heavy ingredients and supplies delivered that need moving for storage and use.
We can rely on you completely to always arrive at work on time and with the right attitude to work hard, listen well and efficiently carry out all tasks that are asked of you. Once you have received the necessary training you will be confident to work alone without assistance and to use your own initiative.

This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
