    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The successful candidate will learn all aspects of painting and decorating within a commercial and residential environment, whilst working towards achieving level 2 qualifications.

The candidate will be involved in all areas from start to finish, which will include preparing walls, floors, doors, skirting boards and ceilings. The candidate will also be applying various coatings and paints. You will be shown the use of specialist tools and equipment used for this role, and will be supervised at all times by a fully qualified member of staff.

You will be working as part of a team and also by yourself so good communication is required.

The successful candidate will have good time keeping and listening skills with the ability to follow instruction well. You will have good hand skills and strong hand-eye coordination.

Personal qualities

You will have good personable skills, be able to work well as a team and be polite at all times to customers. You will be respectful of people's houses, reliable and hard working.

Qualifications required

GCSE grades A*-E (9-3) in Maths and English or equivalent is desired.

Future prospects

The successful candidate will have the opportunity during the level 2 qualification to discuss level 3 progression with the employer. The candidate will need to show initiative, determination and a willingness throughout the level 2.

The employer has been working in the industry for over 15 years and is looking to take on an apprentice to complete domestic and site work with him, completing high standard work at all times.

Training provider

The Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating consists of:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations – Painter
  • Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Attendance is required at our training centre for one day a week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on site and you will have site visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre you will be carrying out various theory and practical modules required for the apprenticeship course. You will learn all the skills necessary and gain the necessary knowledge that will help you throughout your apprenticeship.

You will learn how to prepare areas, spray doors, ceilings and walls, wallpapering, marble graining as well as constructing and using scaffold towers and platforms.

Throughout your training you will supervised by your designated assessor, who will teach you the necessary skills to help you when you return to the site with your employer.

As an additional qualification you will achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health & Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

Skills Group will also support you through your CSCS test to obtain your CSCS card. This confirms that individuals working in the building environment have the necessary competence, and shows the employer that you have the correct qualification to work on-site.
