Things to consider

Carillion is one of the largest employer and trainer of apprentices in England, with over 50 years experience in apprentice training. All Carillion apprentices are employed by Carillion Construction Limited, for the duration of the apprenticeship, but will gain experience with a number of Carillion sub-contractors and other firms in the sector. Carillion delivers a short, full time Level 1 preparatory course for many of its new recruits, to better prepare them for the demanding apprenticeships in construction. Carillion has delivered these short preparatory courses for several years and they have been acknowledged externally as being extremely beneficial to new entrants. During the recruitment process all applicants are initially assessed to establish if they will benefit from a short, Level 1 course. Carillion’s initial assessment decision is based on predicted GCSE results, selection test scores and previous vocational learning experience. A number of new recruits with good GCSE results and prior relevant vocational learning experience at school or a college, may be able to start directly onto a Level 2 intermediate apprenticeship. The short Level 1 course also gives applicants and the company the opportunity to decide if an apprenticeship in construction is the best career choice and applicants who do not progress onto an apprenticeship with Carillion are supported by Carillion and its FE College partners in exploring alternative career paths. Whilst on the initial short course, new recruits will not be paid the full apprentice wage although Carillion will provide a weekly allowance to support travel and other costs. Carillion apprenticeships, like most others, do not guarantee a job for life, but even in the current climate the majority of young people completing an apprenticeship with Carillion, obtained employment, immediately on completion of their apprenticeship. Carillion is unusual in that it operates its own network of apprentice training centres which are located in; Birmingham, Bristol, Chatham, Dudley, Gateshead, Liverpool, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Sittingbourne, Southampton and Sunderland
