    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

As a portable appliance tester, you will be joining a hard working team that provide a high level of service at a variety of locations throughout London. You will learn the technical processes for completing a portable appliance test and must be able to provide a high standard of customer support services to the wide range of clients who use this service, from private landlords to housing authorities.

This apprenticeship is designed to provide you with customer service training that will prepare candidates to develop their skills that they need to support their customer base and maintain their high service levels.

You will have a range of responsibilities that will be focused on:

  • Setting customers expectations of appointment times and durations.
  • Supporting customers with queries relating to types of equipment that need to be tested.
  • Testing equipment.

Desired skills

  • Good customer facing skills are important.
  • A basic knowledge of electrical equipment would be very useful.

Personal qualities

  • Punctual person with a ‘can do’ attitude to work. No ‘it’s not my job’.
  • General good standard of appearance.

Qualifications required

No formal qualifications, but a good level of English communication is required.

Future prospects

Further advanced level training in Management disciplines is available with a view to moving into supervisory and management positions after the first year with the company.

Things to consider

You will need to be confident in making travel arrangements across London and therefore, a full, clean drivers licence is essential. The early stages of this opportunity include some intensive learning relating to undertaking PAT testing.
