    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

As a tiling apprentice you will learn to mark out an area, estimate the amount of tiles and adhesive needed (known as setting out) and then cut the tiles to size and shape with hand-cutters or bench-mounted tools.

The successful apprentice will also learn to prepare surfaces by levelling off with plaster, sand or cement and then fixing the tiles and finally applying grout before finishing off. On some jobs you may have to repair or remove the previous surface before the setting out stage.

You will be working with various building materials, including ceramics, glass, terracotta, stone, granite and marble.

Desired skills

You will need to possess good practical skills and have the ability to follow design plans. Accuracy and attention to detail is essential as is a good level of Maths, as you will need this for calculating quantities of materials. You will have a creative flair and a good eye for design along with the ability to work as part of a team or alone. You will also be polite and courteous as you will be working in customers houses and commercial businesses. You will also need to be flexible and work across the south west on various projects.

Personal qualities

The successful apprentice will need to be polite and courteous, with a positive attitude towards your work and the people around you. You will be an excellent timekeeper as you will need to meet your team at a specific point each day for collection. You will also need to have a can do attitude and have the ability to work to deadlines.

Qualifications required

Grades A*-E in Maths and English or equivalent would be beneficial, but practical ability and a willingness to learn new skills in a new trade will help your application.

Future prospects

On completion of your level 2 wall and floor tiling apprenticeship, you will work towards the advanced level 3. The opportunity of a long term permanent position is available for the right person.

The Apprenticeship in Wall and Floor Tiling includes:

  • Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Wall & Floor Tiling
  • Level 2 Diploma in Wall and Floor Tiling
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

As part of your qualification, you will be expected to attend college for block release sessions. During these sessions you will learn about preparing different surfaces for application, how to use the correct adhesives and cutting and shaping tiles.

Whilst at our training centre, you will also have the opportunity to complete emergency first aid and a certified health and safety course.

As part of attending Skills Group for your apprenticeship we will also arrange for you to work towards achieving your CSCS on-line test giving you the opportunity to apply for your CSCS Card. This confirms that individuals working in the building environment have the necessary competence, to carry out site work with the employer.

You will be visited on-site every 6 to 8 weeks by a Skills Group assessor, who will assess your work and provide feedback on the tasks you have completed.
