What you will do in your working day

Our electrical /mechanical apprenticeship is suited for those who are interested in the practical (hands on) elements of engineering with a strong bias towards the electrical.

Over the duration of the scheme, you will have the opportunity to rotate across a number of departments and projects, completing various manufacturing activities, design, installation, testing /validation, and modification/ repair activities on a number of different electrical control systems with the ultimate aim of moving you into a final placement based on business requirements and your skills displayed during your apprenticeship.

Tasks will include:

  • Fabrication of control panels and equipment layout in preparation for wiring
  • Reading and interpreting wiring and engineering drawings for assembly
  • Wiring electrical panels, boards and cubicles to specification and preparing for testing
  • Calculating cable sizes to load and determining the appropriate means of termination
  • Choosing the right tools for the required job and using them in a correct and safe manor
  • Working as an individual and a team member to see a project from conception to completion
  • Being able to prioritise you own work schedule to help yourself and others to achieve a high-quality build within schedule
  • Produce accurate as built details for sign off
  • Assist senior engineers to fault find existing equipment and install new equipment
  • Testing and commissioning equipment built by others. You never test your own work
  • Working on and building and maintaining Solar panel controls, mains supply switching equipment, Hydrogen fuel cell controls, factory manufacturing machines and a wide and varied assortment of other electrical mechanical controls

The training you will be getting

  • The Apprentice will work towards the Level 3 Engineering Fitter Standard
  • There will be weekly day release to Basingstoke College and monthly 1-1 workplace training and review meetings
  • Functional skills maths and English Level 2 would be delivered remotely if needed
