What you will do in your working day

What will the apprentice be doing? Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches, and other structures e.g., chimney stack. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.

The main duties and tasks of a Bricklaying Apprentice are:

• General labouring, tidying of site, and tool/equipment fetching

• Mixing and turning mortar, loading boards

• Moving, stacking, and passing bricks

• Eventually, you will progress into the laying of bricks and blocks

Those seeking to do a bricklaying apprenticeship need to be patient, it is one of the more complex trades and you need to learn everything it takes to be a bricklayer before you get to start laying bricks/blocks. This process can take up to 6 months, depending on how well they see you progress. Bricklayers are also often the first trades on site, must be willing to be on site early and on time each day. What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The qualification you would be working to is the Level 2 Brickwork (Standard) where we will be looking to partner with a training provider to provide the training. This training will require you to attend college one day per week, and you will be paid a set of 7 hours on your college day each week.

You are expected to travel when necessary for training and/or assessments. You will be responsible for managing/arranging with your line manager.

The training you will be getting

Apprentices without level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

On completion of this apprenticeship, you can progress into work as a qualified Junior Bricklayer where, with more experience, you can look to progress into a senior bricklaying position, site/contracts/project management, self-employment, or brickwork business owner. Some of the best site and project managers we work with started off as bricklayers. It is a challenging but highly respected trade on site. You will be eligible for the Skilled Worker (Blue) CSCS Card after completing the level 2 qualification.
