What you will do in your working day

The successful candidate's main responsibilities will include:

  • Tree management in the park and boundaries of the estate
  • Carry out all tasks relating to the management and planting of woodland and established trees
  • Undertake tree safety work as stipulated by the Head of Forestry
  • Carry out fencing and hedge laying as required
  • Undertake required maintenance tasks as stipulated by the Head of Forestry
  • Ensure all work complies to required Health and Safety standards
  • Communicate any forestry related issues to the Head of Forestry
  • Work alongside external contractors as required
  • Liaise with the Estate Manager and other teams to ensure all work being undertaken which affects other departments is communicated
  • You will also undertake ad hoc tasks as required

The training you will be getting

You will be required to attend Bicton College for block release.
You will achieve a Level 2 Arborist qualification.

English and maths Functional Skills, if required.

The programme culminates in an End Point Assessment, in which the skills and knowledge you will gain during the apprenticeship will be formally tested.

The following qualifications would also be required prior to end point assessment and these will be undertaken during the duration of the apprenticeship:

  • Level 3 award in emergency first aid at work
  • Level 2 award in safe use of brushwood chipper
  • Traffic Management (NRSWA Unit 002 Signing, Lighting and Guarding) 
  • Level 2 award in chainsaw maintenance
  • Level 2 award in crosscutting timber using a chainsaw
  • Level 2 award in felling and processing trees up to 380mm
  • Level 2 award in accessing a tree using a rope and harness
  • Level 3 award in aerial tree rescue operations
  • Level 3 award in aerial cutting of trees using free fall techniques
