Summary
Sir Robert Gefferys School are seeking to appoint a positive and enthusiastic Sport Apprentice to support the school with PE and Sport and in class across the school. SRG aims to provide pupils with a safe, caring environment in which they can learn and develop purposefully.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
We are seeking to appoint a dedicated and enthusiastic PE & Sports Coach Assistant to work across the school and assist the teacher.
Main duties for this role will include:
- To work effectively with individual pupils and/or groups under the direction and supervision of the PE Coordinator and class teachers.
- To support with sport provision.
- To assist with improvement of staff development within the Physical Education and School Sport.
- Creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans.
- Assisting with the planning of learning activities on a regular basis.
- Monitoring pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately recording achievement/progress as directed.
- Providing detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils’ achievement, progress, problems etc.
- Promoting good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
- Administering routine tests, invigilating exams and undertaking routine marking of pupil’s work.
- Assist teachers with learning activities ensuring health and safety and good behaviour of pupils.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care Programmes.
- Establishing constructive relationships with pupils and interacting with them according to individual needs.
- Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
- Encouraging pupils to interact with others and to engage in activities led by the teacher.
- Setting challenging and demanding expectations and promoting self-esteem and independence.
- Providing feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under the guidance of the teacher.
- Support the pupils, either individually or in groups, in accessing learning activities as directed by the teacher or PE Coordinator to enable pupil’s progress towards their targets.
- Have an understanding of safeguarding and be willing to undertake a DBS enhanced disclosure check.
- Demonstrate the ability to develop exemplary professional, creative and personal qualities expected of teaching assistants, including punctuality and reliability.
- The Sports Apprentice may be classed-based each morning but work across the school to support the teaching of PE during the afternoons.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Planning and adapting sessions and activities that respond to customer feedback and encourage customers to develop a lifelong activity habit.
- Coaching or leading pre-planned sport or physical activity sessions that are attractive to the target audience(s) and develop motivational relationships with customers.
- Promoting a physical activity offer, (including but not exclusively) organised play and sport in the community which supports individuals on their behaviour change journey.
- Working collaboratively with sports clubs and other community assets – including volunteers, public services, youth workers, the police and community champions.
- Supporting customers to co-produce rewarding volunteering opportunities.
- Supporting families to participate together in sport and physical activity.
- Working effectively with customer insight to overcome individual, community and societal barriers to participation in physical activity and sport.
- Contributing to the employer’s design of activities and services and practising the employer’s organisation’s values, policies and procedures.
- Contributing to teams that deliver community events and festivals.
- Supporting organisations to evaluate, develop and promote sessions and other opportunities such as outdoor group exercise and informal social play.
- Maintaining personal safety and wellbeing, as well as that of customers.
- Managing disruptive behaviours from individuals within the group setting.
- Encouraging customers to be regularly active – both formally and informally – within sports clubs or leisure facilities including open-space.
- Effectively using social media and technology, appropriately, to deliver targeted messages to identified customer groups for example children, teenagers, adults and older adults.
- Effectively monitor and evaluate activities, sessions and projects using technology platforms to maintain accurate records and produce timely reports.
Training schedule
On Level 2 Community Activator Coach standard, you will work towards the following:
- Behaviours, Skills & Knowledge.
- Functional Skills in maths and English at level 2 (if not already exempt through prior qualifications).
- End-Point Assessment (EPA).
- You will have regular visits at the workplace from a designated assessor to observe your progress and competence in the role you are carrying out.
- Training will take place one day a month with Argyle Community Trust at The Foulston Park Community Hub.
- Apprenticeship standard Community Activator Coach.
- Training provider - Plymouth Argyle Community Trust.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4-9 (A-C))
- Maths (grade 4-9 (A-C))
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

- There may be the potential for full-time employment upon successful completion of the apprenticeship for the right candidate.
