What you'll do at work

In line with the University’s Strategy, Values and Behaviours, and as part of your apprenticeship programme, you will:
Complete the Credit Control CICM Diploma in Credit and Collections, and Advanced Credit Controller Apprenticeship (Level 3).
Prioritise and manage tasks using guidance from your line manager.
Use University systems to carry out day-to-day duties efficiently.
Analyse and evaluate data to formulate appropriate responses to resolve defined problems.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships within your team.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues across the Finance Department, staff and students in Faculties/Services, and external organisations as required.
Carry out credit control and collection activities.
Assist with billing, credit notes, and reconciliation tasks.
Interact professionally with students and customers of the University.

  • Engage with stakeholders on accounts, for example to resolve issues, leverage payment, support business growth.
  • Negotiate good credit management or debt collection outcomes, in line with organisational policies.
  • Use questioning techniques to acquire information from customers to understand the customer’s financial situation or specialist needs or requirements and develop acceptable solutions, adapting communication style to suit audience.
  • Identify, defuse and resolve account issues which have multiple strands or involve sensitive situations, such as critical business accounts or vulnerable customers.
  • Develop strong, positive and sustained relationships with stakeholders, recognising the business context of relationships and their importance to the organisation, while dealing with a challenging situation.
  • Comply with relevant governance, policies and procedures.
  • Follow the environmental, social and governance requirements of their organisation.

  • Review and analyse customer applications, seeking additional financial and non-financial information when required, and assisting with the reporting of credit checks and credit limits.
  • Analyse customer credit risk and develop strategies, making evidence-based decisions on credit limits in line with regulatory and organisational requirements.
  • Advise on account issues and give expert support, including referral to specialist colleagues or agencies, to find a clear path to payment or resolution for those facing financial difficulty that minimises risks of overdues or bad debts for either corporate business accounts; individual customers; or third parties, for example debt collection agencies, debt advice agencies.
  • Support consistent decision making, practice and compliance with policies, regulatory requirements, and procedures by challenging any inaccuracies in customer or debt data, monitoring performance measures and advising colleagues, third party suppliers and the wider business within your remit.
  • Remove controlled goods in line with organisational, legal and regulatory requirements, including the National Standards.
  • Sell controlled goods in line with organisational, legal and regulatory requirements, including Taking Control of Goods National Standards.

Training schedule

Apprentices will complete two qualifications as part of this programme: IIA (Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors) Certificate in Internal Audit and Business Risk Internal Audit Practitioner The Certificate in Internal Audit and Business Risk is a practical, accredited, modular course that provides a thorough grounding in the practice and principles of audit, governance, risk and assurance. Learners will complete four individual awards each covering a key area of internal audit. Each award requires about 30 hours of learning through reading, reflection, two day interactive workshop attendance and completion of a personal development log. The Internal Audit Practitioner designation has been designed to support new internal auditors as they take their first step toward becoming professionally qualified. Other requirements

Location: The role-holder will be based at the either the University’s City or Coach Lane campus, but travel to other premises which the University may from time to time occupy will be required. Attendance Requirements: Northumbria University is an on-campus organisation where colleagues work regular patterns of hours and on campus, with some flexibility on the timing of their hours and the location of their work in discussion with their manager. Colleagues who would like to make a long term or permanent change to their hours, pattern or place of work should request this via a Flexible Working Request. The nature of the post is such that the role-holder is expected to work and attend at the University’s premises such hours as are reasonably necessary for the effective discharge of the duties of the role, within a normal working week of 37 hours.
