Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
You’ll support children aged 3–11 in a fun, safe, and engaging environment creating exciting play opportunities, building confidence, and encouraging healthy activity. This role is ideal for someone who’s enthusiastic, caring, and enjoys making a positive difference every day.
Please note: Due to Ofsted regulations, applicants must be 18 or over.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and lead fun, inclusive play and learning activities.
- Support children during wraparound hours (before school, lunchtime, and after school – alternating each week).
- Maintain a safe and caring environment and complete basic risk assessments.
- Promote healthy eating and help prepare nutritious snacks.
- Build strong relationships with children, parents, and school staff.
- Follow safeguarding, health & safety, and EYFS principles at all times.

- Assist with planning, creating and identifying loose parts to encourage and inspire sustainable practices, including recycling, reusing, reducing and repairing.
- Recognise the benefits of risk taking in play and contribute to dynamic risk-benefit assessment.
- Recognise that children and young people communicate with a range of different types of behaviour and may need Playworker support.
- Support children and young people to understand and manage their emotions, feelings and actions.
- Manage interactions with parents/caregivers professionally.

- Contribute to health and safety checks.

- Contribute to ensuring security arrangements are followed, such as children’s arrival and departures from the setting.
- Work as part of a team to support and supervise children and young people on off-site trips, complying with formal risk assessment of venues visited.
- Apply Playwork approaches in own role, incorporating new and emerging themes.
- Reflect on own practice to create a personal development plan with supervisor.
- Recognise the boundaries of own self and other Playworkers’ interaction with children, and when it is necessary to report incidents to the appropriate safeguarding lead and Local Authority Designated Officer – LADO if appropriate when a Playworkers’ behaviour towards a child may pose a risk of harm.

Training schedule
Training will be delivered remotely by EducationWise,
The apprentice will complete off-the-job training for 6 hours per week, which will be planned around their working hours. All training sessions will take place online, meaning there is no need to travel to a college or training centre.

The apprenticeship training is structured around a blend of online learning, practical on-the-job experience, and 1:1 tutor support.
Educationwise provides a flexible remote learning model designed to fit around the apprentice’s work schedule. Apprentices will have access to a digital learning platform, online workshops, and progress reviews to track their development.
At the end of the programme, apprentices will complete an End-Point Assessment to achieve the Level 2 Playworker qualification, with clear progression opportunities to higher-level childcare or sports coaching apprenticeships.

GCSE in:

Other requirements
Other requirements: Must be 18 or over (due to Ofsted regulations for wraparound care settings). Must be able to pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Must be reliable and able to travel to the placement location for wraparound hours (early mornings, lunchtimes, and afternoons/evenings, alternating each week). A positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a team supporting children aged 3–11.
