Summary

This apprenticeship offers the opportunity to train in the furniture, furnishings & interiors manufacturing industry. As a furniture-making operative, you’ll learn how to manufacture and assemble both mass-produced and bespoke furniture, as well as components for kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Receive, read, and interpret job specifications, including drawings and technical information.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and compliant work area at all times.
  • Plan work and resources effectively, using sustainable practices to meet production targets.
  • Organise and check the availability and condition of machinery, tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Carry out first-line maintenance tasks such as checking, cleaning, and lubricating tools and machinery.
  • Prepare and operate machinery, hand tools, and power tools for furniture and component manufacture.
  • Check and maintain jigs and templates, reporting any faults or damage.
  • Prepare materials before and after assembly, resolving issues such as sanding, cleaning, or glueing.
  • Manufacture furniture components by measuring, cutting, and shaping materials using a variety of tools and machinery.
  • Assemble furniture components using techniques such as glueing, stapling, dowelling, screwing, and nailing.
  • Apply finishing operations to assembled furniture, including surface treatments, fittings, and fixtures.
  • Carry out rectification, repair, or rework on furniture items when required.
  • Pack, store, and quality-check finished assemblies, rectifying or reporting any issues.
  • Complete all required documentation or digital records, such as job sheets and production logs.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and problem-solving activities to support business needs.

What you'll learn

  • Read and interpret job specifications, technical drawings or information for furniture making activity.
  • Plan furniture making activity including timescales for completion, and organise materials and resources.
  • Prepare and maintain the work area.
  • Apply safe systems of working including risk assessment.
  • Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Follow workplace operating procedures.
  • Store tools and equipment.
  • Select tools, equipment, and machinery for furniture making activity.
  • Apply first line maintenance of, tools, equipment, and machinery. For example, checking tool condition, cleaning, lubrication, visual inspection, tool calibration.
  • Set up and operate furniture making machinery.
  • Identify and select materials used in furniture making.
  • Apply preparation techniques to materials.
  • Prepare and use jigs and templates used in the work activity. Check jigs and templates for damage.
  • Measure and mark out materials including measurement tool calibration checks.
  • Manufacture furniture components including cutting and shaping.
  • Apply jointing techniques to produce furniture components.
  • Assemble and secure furniture components in position, for example clamping and gluing techniques.
  • Attach furniture fittings and fixtures.
  • Carry out rectification, repair and rework of manufactured furniture.

  • Record furniture making activity information - paper based or electronic.
  • Apply basic continuous improvement techniques. For example, lean manufacturing, six sigma, 5S and KAIZEN.

Training schedule

The apprenticeship training is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular college attendance. This training will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the Furniture Making Operative L2 standard. On completion, the apprentice will receive the Furniture Making Operative Level 2  qualification. Functional Skills in maths and English may also be required, depending on current level.

GCSE in:

  • English (grade Grade 9 – 4 / A* - C)
  • Maths (grade Grade 9 – 4 / A* - C)

Other requirements

You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. In some cases, you may be required to have a telephone interview with Yeovil College prior to your application being passed on.
