Summary

CTS are looking for an Apprentice Designer to join our growing company. We are temporary traffic management CAD design experts working within a variety of industries. We are a growing business with an ever-increasing workload meaning there is opportunity to gain a vast number of skills, experience & develop a rewarding career.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

You will be working with the design team to develop your skills and knowledge and your day to day responsibilities will be:

  • Develop an understanding of the sector through observation and working closely with your mentor
  • Produce/ design scaled and schematic temporary traffic management drawings in BricsCAD & Cone software
  • Assist with design modifications to facilitate operations or improve safety of temporary traffic management schemes
  • Make sure all temporary traffic management drawings are in accordance with Safety at Street Works & Road Works ACOP & Traffic Signs Manual - Chapter 8 Part 1: Design
  • Scale produced drawings to suitable ISO scales in paper space, to suitable paper sizes
  • Ensure all paperwork is up to date i.e. drawing register, drawing enquiry book, correspondence records, and approval emails
  • Maintain CAD models, drawings and associated files per department procedures set in the QMS Manual for the company
  • Work with Lead Designer to improve skills in BricsCAD and to learn how to keep a consistent high standard of final presentation of temporary traffic management drawings
  • Receive continual Health & Safety and LANTRA AWARDS approved training to help develop and keep up to date your knowledge and experience in temporary traffic management
  • Complete any other administration duties for the company
  • Complete all training associated with the apprenticeship

What you'll learn

  • Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating civil engineering systems
  • Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve civil engineering problems
  • Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts
  • Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Produce and interpret civil engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used
  • Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation
  • Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation
  • Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks
  • Apply principles of sustainable development, and assess the impact of these in their work
  • Employ project management techniques, measuring and recording progress against civil engineering project plans
  • Assess and report on quality using appropriate management and assurance systems and continuous improvement processes
  • Identify and use resources, equipment and technology to meet project requirements, including specifications, budget and timescales
  • Monitor and manage individual performance, and supervise others, recognising the need to comply with appropriate codes of practice and equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) requirements
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, using appropriate engineering terminology and conventions
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Training schedule

College day will be 1 day a week based at South & City College Birmingham - Longbridge Campus

You will be studying:

  • Civil Engineering Level 4 Standard
  • A Level 4 qualification in Construction and Built Environment

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4 or Above)
  • Maths (grade 4 or Above)

Other requirements

You have to already be driving or taking driving lessons as road awareness is essential. As part of the role, you may be required to attend sites and work with partners. You may be required to work additional hours to meet deadlines. Once the vacancy closes, there will be a recruitment day event.
