Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Work in compliance with occupational health, safety and environmental requirements to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of self and others at all times. Report in a timely manner any noncompliance against the construction programme to the appropriate person.
- Carry out their work conforming to all current and relevant building regulations, quality standards and work instructions.
- Work to the construction programme, adapting to changes in schedule and requirements where necessary.
- Prepare the work site, including setting out the work and the selection of materials and tools appropriate to the project.
- Use the appropriate tools and equipment to construct walls with brick and block to industry standards.
- Carry out minor repairs or modifications to masonry.
- Collaborate with stakeholders, including clients and other construction trades.
- Maintain a clear and safe worksite at all times, disposing of waste appropriately and sustainably.
- Carry out continuous professional development to maintain knowledge of current and future developments affecting the role.
- Receive, unload, move and lift materials to site for installation following good handling practices preventing injury or damage.

- Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Comply with industry regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Read and interpret information from drawings and specifications.
- Estimate and select required resources: For example, the quantity of bricks and blocks, mortar, wall ties and insulation.
- Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
- Select and use hand tools.
- Maintain and store hand tools.
- Set out brick and block cavity wall to given tolerances, including an opening.
- Construct a stretcher bond brick and block cavity wall with return and opening to given tolerances, including installing a lintel with soldiers, brick and edge sill, closure around opening, insulation, fire stopping, cavity tray, damp proof course (DPC) and weep holes.
- Apply joint finishes: For example, half round, flush, weather struck and recessed.
- Set out and construct a simple brick solid wall with capping.
- Gauge and hand mix mortar to ratio.
- Measure and cut bricks and blocks using hand tools, to given tolerances.
- Carry out a simple repair: For example, replacing damaged bricks.
- Protect materials and finished work.
- Verbally communicate with others, applying construction terminology.
- Follow equity, diversity and inclusion guidance.
- Applies team working principles to their own and the wider build team.

Training schedule
Bricklayer – Level 2 qualification delivered through in-person training both by the employer and Yeovil College. College delivery is every Friday during term time.
The apprenticeship training is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular college attendance. This training will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the Bricklayer standard.
On completion, the apprentice will receive a Bricklayer Level 2 qualification. Functional Skills in Maths and English may also be required depending on current level.

GCSE in:

- Maths (grade Grade 9 – 4 / A* - C)

Other requirements
You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. In some cases, you may be required to have a telephone interview with Yeovil College prior to your application being passed on. If a suitable candidate is found prior to the advertised closing date, it may close earlier, so please apply early to avoid disappointment.
