Summary

Working as an Automotive/Motorsport Technician, this varied role spans the Automotive department and Motorsport team. Based in Boston, you will undertake a Level 2 Autocare Apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Technician, which may lead to an Advanced L3 Apprenticeship or Trainee Role (dependent on prior qualifications).

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • To support high quality teaching, learning and assessment in the workshop and a positive experience for the learner
  • To assist and support both Automotive and Motorsport department
  • Maintaining acceptable standards of achievement, behaviour, discipline and punctuality
  • To prepare the workshop environment for practical delivery lessons
  • Maintain and prepare Motorsport competition vehicles to specifications for racing activities to include maintenance of Automotive Teaching resources
  • To demonstrate the relevant competencies for the Autocare Apprenticeship and build a suitable portfolio of evidence
  • To reclaim materials where possible and restock or prepare for scrap disposal as necessary
  • To monitor stock levels of materials and tools etc. and report to the Senior Learning Lead
  • To periodically check tools and repair and/or report as necessary
  • To carry out basic maintenance and development of work areas
  • To check and unload incoming materials and resources, prepare and place in store, deal with documentation as appropriate
  • Occasional collection of goods may be required for which a college vehicle will be provided
  • To maintain a clear, clean and safe environment in line with college health & safety processes
  • To support lecturers with the required practical elements of delivery
  • To carry out additional roles within the college as may be agreed from time to time
  • Occasionally may be required to provide support for Boston College Racing Team

  • Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability procedures, regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
  • Apply vehicle safety inspection and routine maintenance procedures using vehicle specific data on car, car derived van or light goods vehicle.
  • Select and use tools and equipment, mechanical and electrical measuring tools, and diagnostic equipment.

  • Inspect, remove, and replace of parts or components in cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles for the following: steering systems and suspension systems, braking systems, emission systems, air conditioning systems, battery and charging systems, fluid and filtration systems.
  • Apply state-of-health condition monitoring tests to high voltage batteries and chargers for electrified cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles.
  • Apply four-wheel geometry checks and adjustments to cars, car derived vans, and light goods vehicles.
  • Apply safe working practices and procedures to isolate electrified vehicles for maintenance.
  • Record vehicle service maintenance, parts replacement, or repair.
  • Apply customer service principles and organisational customer care practices. For example, identifying customer and vehicle needs, resolve low level customer complaints, make recommendations to customers based on results of inspection, maintenance, or repair of vehicles, customer payment transactions and organisational sales processes.

Training schedule

The Autocare Technician Level 2 Apprenticeship will take you 30-months to complete. You will study at college for one day a week, and four days with your employer.

You will be expected to have a minimum attendance rate of 95%.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4 and above)
  • Maths (grade 4 and above)

Other in:

Automotive/Motorsport Technology (grade Level 2 or 3)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
