Summary

Sapphire Vehicle Services is looking for people to join our HGV Technician Apprenticeship Scheme to be developed into tomorrow’s best Heavy Vehicle Repair Technicians. After completing the apprenticeship course, you will be a fully qualified HGV technician. Duties include: roller brake tests, Tacho calibrations and air conditioning service/repairs.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Technicians will be trained in all aspects of heavy vehicle repair and will include diagnostics using OEM equipment for Mercedes, Scania, DAF & IVECO
  • Our HGV Technicians service and maintain all aspects of our modern and varied fleet of heavy goods vehicles, trailers and tail lifts

Our fully equipped and IRTEC accredited workshops all have the ability to complete:

  • Roller brake tests
  • Tacho calibrations
  • Air conditioning service / repairs
  • Windscreen repair
  • Tail lift statutory inspections and weight tests

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

  • Block release to Stephenson College, Coalville
  • Functional skills if necessary
  • On-the-job training
  • Off-the-job training

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

English and Maths (grade 4/C or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

The successful candidate will attend block release at Loughborough College Group, Stephenson College campus, in Coalville. During this time, you will be required to stay away from home in host/hotel accommodation. All travel and food costs will be covered
