Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Main roles and responsibilities:
- To undertake an apprenticeship leading to a nationally recognised qualification whilst working as part of a team.
- Able to work to a high quality with relevant instructions and supervision.
- To build pumpsets powered by either diesel or electric motors, testing, preparing for final despatch.
- To communicate accurately with your Production Supervisor and work colleagues.
- To be focused on quality, timescales and working as part of a team.
- All small tools or equipment used to be kept in good condition. Any defects found must be reported to your Production Supervisor.
- To use cranes or other lifting equipment safely to lift, move, load or unload components or assemblies as necessary to carry out scheduled tasks.
- To be able to identify faulty parts and report your findings to the Production Supervisor.
- To promote a continuous improvement culture by making suggestions to the Production Supervisor/Operations Manager.
- To take pride in your area of work and maintain a clean working environment.
- To be responsible for your workstations tools and to perform daily checks to ensure that they are in safe working order and ready for the next day.
- Any other duties that may from time to time be required to maintain the smooth running of the factory.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
- Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
- Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
- Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
- Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
- Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
- Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
- Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
- Reporting work outcomes or issues.
- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
- Operating within limits of responsibility.
- Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training schedule
- The learner will be studying the Engineering Fitter Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard qualification.
- Day release to West Suffolk College.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
This is a physical role, manufacturing large pump sets. Lifting equipment is provided, but large components are being moved daily to assemble the products. An aptitude for mechanical assembly. The factory is heated, but it is important to dress appropriately for the season.
