What you'll do at work
We are now looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to join our team as a Level 4 Assistant Farm Manager Apprentice.
What you'll do at work
You will work as part of a small team and, with initial training, be able to plan your own day. You will need to be proactive with problems as they arise. This is a great opportunity to experience all of the tasks involved in running a mixed farm, from formulating a beef ration, driving a combine (Training can be provided, but a tractor license is desired), buying livestock, to generating an annual budget. You can continue your career in agriculture with us; a full-time position will be available upon successful completion of the apprenticeship for the right candidate. Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience on the following tasks:-
- Daily care for 200 head of cattle
- Daily care for our small flock of sheep
- Maintain accurate Livestock records
- Maintain accurate field records, including spraying and fertiliser records
- Implement and promote regenerative farming techniques.
- Primary and secondary cultivations
- Drilling, fertiliser spreading and spraying
- Combining and corn carting
- Muck carting and bale carting
- Mowing
- Fencing
- Pressure washing buildings, vehicles and equipment
- Machinery and equipment maintenance and diagnostics
What duties will you be responsible for in this role?
- Maintaining the Red Tractor standards of livestock welfare
- Adhere to the highest standards of health, safety and environment, following all industry procedures, including maintaining bio-security standards and cleaning schedules
- Ensure the farm yard and all vehicles and equipment are clean and tidy at all times
- Cover the Farm Manager during periods of annual leave
- Understanding leadership and problem-solving skills
- Ability to learn to oversee farm performance and meet key targets
- A hands-on approach to farm operations and team management

- Apply physiological principles to identify interventions to enhance productivity and maintain unit health.
- Develop, implement and monitor a soil, manure or nutrient management plan to improve soil structure and fertility and monitor progress.
- Implement and review plans to manage the health of the production system in line with legislation and company policy.
- Implement practices that comply with environmental protection legislation and industry guidance, including pollution avoidance and control, wildlife and countryside protection and protection of biodiversity.
- Improve environmental practices on site including protecting and enhancing biodiversity.
- Develop and implement plan(s) to optimise value of by-products and dispose of non reusable (single use) wastes.
- Implement plans to produce products or services to customer specification, quality standards and production standards.
- Collect and evaluate critical information using digital tools including production unit performance, identify opportunities for improvement and propose changes to technical production strategy and operational adjustments.
- Analyse basic farm and or enterprise data (including financial and production) and research farm practices. Use this to benchmark against other farms and support recommendations for future actions.
- Develop and evaluate production unit plans to meet business requirements.
- Manage, review and monitor health, safety, welfare and wellbeing on production unit. Carry out risk management including assessment of risk and mitigation. Communicate health and safety information to staff or stakeholders.
- Manage own health and safety and promotes best practice to others when undertaking activity.
- Make recommendations on machinery and infrastructure for a farm or horticultural business activity including condition, replacements and return on investment.
- Use, maintain and oversee machinery and infrastructure in line with legislation, manufacturers guidance and business policy.
- Communicates in a professional manner with staff and stakeholders, adapting approach to audience including technical audiences and use of technical industry terminology.
- Build relationships with stakeholders including negotiation.
- Supervise staff or contractors during the main stages of the production cycle.
- Keep business records including using digital tools.
- Oversees and uses agrochemicals or organic equivalents including using spraying equipment.

Training schedule
1-2-1 teaching and mentoring.
A training specialist will provide 1-2-1 mentoring and coaching through online reviews and occasional planned visits to the workplace.
A training specialist will coach, teach, and support the apprentice online.
Face-to-face teaching as a group (Online delivery).
The programme will be delivered online monthly, led by an experienced team with input from industry experts. There will also be optional monthly drop-in sessions for support.
Tutorials
Apprentices will be offered regular 1-2-1 tutorial time remotely with their specialist trainer.
E-learning
We provide an e -learning platform with work and activities for apprentices to complete.

Other requirements
Hours Mon - Fri 8 am to 5 pm (with unpaid breaks daily- 2 x 15 min and 1 x 30 min breaks) Sat - Sun 8 am to 12 midday on a rota basis. Busy times (July - Oct) 8 am to 10 pm on a rota basis. Minimum 40 hrs per week. Pay Rate £10 per hour.
