Summary

As a Technician Scientist apprentice, you will be working in our state-of-the-art labs, learning from our expert chemists & technicians, running laboratory tests and gaining a technical understanding of our cutting-edge chemistry, as well as a thorough appreciation of the stringent health and safety standards we expect and adhere to.

Monday to Friday. Start between 8.00am and 9.30am and finish between 4pm to 5.30pm with 1-hour for lunch daily. Early 2.30pm Friday finish.

What you'll do at work

Typical duties include:

  • Maintaining safe work practices and adhering to all safety regulations
  • Running laboratory testing accurately and precisely using established test methods
  • Communicating test results to internal customers
  • Carrying out calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of the laboratory equipment
  • Maintaining technical knowledge through training
  • Ensuring that procedures and documentation is maintained

What you'll learn

  • Identify potential scientific techniques to meet defined objectives.
  • Review and select appropriate scientific techniques to undertake required tasks (consider risk management, safe working practices, equipment availability, quality standards, the environment, and sustainability).
  • Source and calibrate specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment.
  • Plan and perform laboratory-based investigations and scientific experimentation using scientific techniques, procedures, and methods relevant to the role.
  • Systematically obtain information when conducting scientific experiments.
  • Record and store data in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the development or improvement of processes and methodologies and support their implementation into the business as part of a wider team.
  • Use data analysis tools and software packages to process or produce reliable, accurate data or information.
  • Interpret scientific data to inform actions or recommendations and escalate where required.
  • Present the results of scientific work to scientific and non-scientific audiences in written and oral form.
  • Plan and prioritise own tasks and complete work to schedule whilst maintaining compliance with internal and external requirements.
  • Contribute to recommendations, improvements, or scientific solutions to meet the requirements of internal or external customers.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and identify results requiring further investigation or escalation.
  • Keeps up to date with advances in scientific and sector working practices and technologies. Shares best practice across the team.

Your training plan

You will undertake a Level 5 Technician Scientist Apprenticeship with an Ofsted rated 'Outstanding' training provider, CSR Scientific Training, which will include: 

  • Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 5 Technician Scientist
  • On-the-job competency training
  • Theoretical knowledge - L4 or L5 HNC/HND in Applied Science (if required)

The majority of your learning will be completed online once a week with some face-to-face practical sessions (if completing HNC/HND) in Birmingham.

Upon successful completion, apprentices can apply for professional registration as a Registered Scientist, RSci, with the relevant professional body.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

x 5 including Maths, English and Science (grade C/4 or above)

A Level in:

Science or equivalent (grade C/Merit or above)
