Year 1 = college 4 days a week, EDM 1 day a week (Monday-Friday). Year 2-4 = EDM 3 days a week, college 1 day a week (Monday-Thursday). When working at EDM the hours will be 6:45am – 4:15pm (with 30 minutes unpaid lunch break).

What you'll do at work

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Gain skills in the use of appropriate measuring equipment and be able to interpret and accurately measure.
  • Gain knowledge and skill in the setup, guarding and use of appropriate machinery required to undertake manufacture.
  • Work towards the ability to interpret engineering technical drawings.
  • Developing the skills to construct or modify equipment from verbal instructions and drawings to a high degree of precision.
  • To be able to demonstrate the skills and processes as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team, to undertake tasks as instructed and increase overall contribution to the business.
  • Maintain thorough records and documentation of a training/education/skills progress.
  • Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering skills and processes while under the instruction of skilled technical staff.
  • Be skilled in the use of appropriate measuring equipment and be able to interpret and accurately measure.
  • Gain knowledge and skill in the setup, guarding and use of appropriate machinery required to undertake manufacture.
  • To be able to demonstrate the skills and processes as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team, to undertake tasks as instructed and increase overall contribution to the business.

  • Undertake skills, knowledge and behaviours required to achieve end point assessment at the appointed partnering college.
  • Learning and understanding the importance of Health & Safety with the workplace.

  • Maintain thorough records and documentation of a training/education/skills progress.
  • Establish yourself as an integral part of a multi-skilled team of engineers.

  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

5 Subjects (Including Maths and English) (grade Grade 4/C or above)

Other requirements

Flexibility to travel within the UK and abroad – this requires you to have a passport. Able to achieve UK Security Clearance – this means no unspent criminal convictions and you must be a UK national.

After this apprenticeship

Dependent on opportunities at the time of successful completion, the apprentice will be offered full-time employment on a permanent basis. This will be based on a development plan as a Junior Fitter for 12-18 months with regular increases in rate of pay leading up to 100% of the full rate for the role.

EDM are open to supporting further education if requested, dependent on the needs and the role at the time.
