Summary

As an Accounts Apprentice, you will support the Finance Team with a variety of finance-related and administrative tasks, gaining valuable, real world experience while working towards your AAT Level 3 qualification.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assisting with the processing of purchase invoices and staff expense claims
  • Supporting monthly reconciliations including bank accounts, petty cash, and debit card transactions
  • Monitoring and reporting on aged debtors and outstanding payments
  • Ensuring financial records and documentation are accurate and well-maintained
  • Calculating and checking payment amounts and financial data with precision
  • Helping to prepare internal reports and management accounts using Excel and finance software
  • Assisting with payroll administration, such as timesheet collation, checking records for accuracy, and liaising with the payroll provider
  • Supporting with internal audits and financial compliance tasks
  • Maintaining well-organised digital and paper-based filing systems
  • Managing shared finance inboxes and handling routine queries
  • Taking accurate notes or minutes during finance team meetings
  • Carrying out general finance admin tasks as required by your line manager

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

Your training plan

The Level 3 Assistant Accountant apprenticeship standard includes 6 AAT exams, in addition to the Synoptic Assessment as part of the End-Point Assessment (EPA) process.

The knowledge units will be delivered at the EMA training hub in Derby, Leicester or Nottingham (depending on apprentices’ location) through day release

AAT Modules are as follows:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping (Level 2 Unit)
  • Principles of Bookkeeping (Level 2 Unit)
  • Management Accounting Techniques

Financial Accounting:

  • Preparing Financial Statements
  • Business Awareness
  • Tax Processes for Business

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

5 GCSE's including Maths and English (grade 5/B or above)
