Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The role will involve working on various Rolling stock vehicles, including the dismantling and re-assembly of mechanical equipment and vehicle structure, thorough examination/inspection of mechanical equipment, pipe forming and silver soldering/Brazing of hydraulic/pneumatic systems, repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment/systems.

The role will be hands-on whilst being supervised to ensure that the electrical services are maintained in a safe, functional and quality order.

We have exciting opportunities for Mechanical Fitter/Vehicle Builder Apprentices to be part of the production team at Gemini Rail Services.

The role will be employed on a full-time basis. The position will include attendance at a technical college to complete modules to support the apprenticeship program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To ensure that all key performance indicators (KPI’s) and /or objectives set with your Line Manager are performed effectively and within target and agreed parameters.
  • To adhere to the Company’s policies and procedures and ensure that you respect and adhere to these with regard to health and safety, minimisation of waste, care for the environment, equality of opportunity and elimination of discrimination and unfair treatment.
  • To undertake any other duties as may be required from time to time by your Line manager.
  • To attend college on a day release and pass modules in the expected timeframes

  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Other requirements

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must meet the following residency criteria: You must have lived in the UK, the British Overseas Territories, or Crown Dependencies (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) for at least three years prior to the start of the apprenticeship. Note: Gemini Rail Services operates a strict drug & alcohol policy, and all candidates will be subject to a safety critical medical and screening. Predicted grades will be accepted. However, any offers made will be conditional, pending actual grades.
