Summary

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service are looking for a new Apprentice HGV Technician. You will be studying toward your Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician (Heavy) Level 3 Apprenticeship.

What you'll do at work

As an Apprentice HGV Technician you will:

  • Be eager and willing to be enrolled on the following Level 3 Apprenticeship Course ‘Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician (Heavy)’ which runs for a period of 3 years
  • Upon successful completion of the above apprenticeship course and the successful postholder obtaining their LGV/Cat C Driving Licence there will be the opportunity to join the established fleet team in becoming a competent Vehicle Technician where you will receive a Grade E salary which presents a fantastic progression opportunity for the successful candidate
  • Learn the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of a wide range of vehicles and associated operational equipment, ensuring all work is completed to the required standard
  • Be based at Charminster workshop and attend Bournemouth College on block release
  • To complete all college study, course work, assignments and end point assessments
  • Learn the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of a wide range of vehicles and associated operational equipment, ensuring all work is completed to the required standards
  • Learn how to carry out vehicle and stowage modifications including the fabrication of components
  • Learn how to effectively communicate with manufacturers and suppliers to aid the diagnosis and rectification of defects, ensuring all work is completed to the appropriate standard
  • Be willing to travel across the whole service area to attend operational incidents, vehicle breakdowns and DWFRS sites as required to learn how to provide repair, maintenance, and vehicle recovery
  • Effectively assist Vehicle Technicians with advanced activities when required with appropriate supervision
  • Follow and comply with Health & Safety procedures and best practice
  • Uphold Service values and the Code of Ethics

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

About this company

The combined Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service came into being on 1 April 2016, and serves the local authority areas of Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole, Dorset, Swindon, and Wiltshire. The organisation delivers a range of prevention, protection and response services to over 1.45 million residents across the Service area, using the following resources: 50 fire stations – four wholetime-crewed only, eight crewed by wholetime and on-call personnel, and 38 crewed by on-call firefighters only. A Service Control Centre, answering 999 emergency calls 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Over 1,000 wholetime and on-call firefighters. Over 70 fire engines and a large number of specialist support vehicles, equipped to deal with a wide range of emergencies – including fires, road traffic collisions, flooding and water rescue, animal rescue, rescue from height, and helping colleagues in the police and ambulance service. Around 300 Corporate staff helping to provide our essential front-line services to both residents and local businesses. Over 100 volunteers.
