Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Building Services installer, look after and fix the commercial heating / chilled and Domestic Water inside and outside buildings.
The exact job depends on the project you will be working on, though all Building Services installer have the skills and knowledge to get the job done properly and safely.
A Mechanical Pipe fitter will need to be able to:
- Work at height
- Work alone or with little supervision
- Travel
- Build relationships
- Read building and engineering drawings
- Understand heating control wiring and circuit diagrams
- Choose materials and equipment
- Inspect and test installations
- Diagnose and fix faults
- Write reports
You will begin your apprenticeship working towards a commercial Building Services installer level 2 qualification before progressing to a Building Services craftsperson level 3. This will include achieving your Technical Certificate by attending a Training Centre on a day release basis.
Your National Vocational Qualification will be achieved by the work you undertake with J A Brooks.

Course contents
- Comply with building services engineering industry regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and practices.
- Identify and report hazards and risks in the workplace. Take action to mitigate hazards and risks.
- Comply with safe systems of work and apply control measures.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Follow environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
- Move, lift, and handle materials.
- Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Use and store hand tools, power tools and equipment.
- Prepare work area and complete set out requirements.
- Maintain a safe working area.
- Select materials, components, and fittings required to complete the work tasks.
- Plan order of works and carry out pre-work checks.
- Carry out pre commissioning activities for building service engineering installations.
- Fabricate system pipework including pipe bending.
- Test fabricated pipework system.
- Install pipework system, including pipework, bracketry and components of pipework systems, not including the energy source.
- Use pipework jointing techniques.
- Test installed pipework.
- Apply decommissioning practices, for example draining pipework system.
- Complete system handover activities.
- Complete a final quality inspection.
- Communicate with others verbally including internal and external customers, colleagues using sector specific terminology.
- Communicate with others in a written context including internal and external customers, colleagues using sector specific terminology.
- Interpret drawings from drawings, specifications, and system schematics.
- Record or enter information - paper based or electronic. For example, energy usage, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation, work sheets, checklists, waste environmental records and any legal reporting requirements.
- Use information technology and digital systems. Comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations and polices.
- Follow equity, diversity, and inclusion policies.
- Work within limits of authority and escalate issues.
- Collaborate with others including customers, colleagues, internal and external stakeholders and other trades.
- Apply team working and wellbeing principles.

Your training plan
- We offer a Commercial Building Services Installer Level 2 qualification before progressing to a Building Services craftsperson level 3
- The Installer level (Level 2) is achieved 'en-route’ after approximately two years, with the Level 3 craftsperson lasting a further two years: so, achieving the apprenticeship would be expected in four years
- As part of the plumbing apprenticeship, you'll be in full time employment with a company receiving a wage from day one
- You'll spend time learning your trade by gaining hands-on experience working on-site with us as well as attending college to learn the theoretical knowledge you will need
