What you will do in your working day

  • Plan core plumbing and domestic heating systems to meet customers’ needs
  • Select and size core plumbing and domestic heating systems
  • Carry out preparatory work for the Installation of core plumbing and domestic heating systems
  • Install core plumbing and domestic heating systems
  • Test and commission core plumbing and domestic heating system installations
  • Carry out appropriate handover procedures for core plumbing and domestic heating systems
  • Carry out routine service and maintenance procedures on core plumbing and domestic heating systems
  • Perform fault finding, diagnosis and rectification procedures on core plumbing and domestic heating systems
  • Decommission core plumbing and domestic heating systems
  • Plan low pressure natural gas systems
  • Select and size low pressure natural gas systems
  • Carry out preparatory work for the Installation of low pressure natural gas systems
  • Install low pressure natural gas systems
  • Test and commission low pressure natural gas systems
  • Carry out appropriate handover procedures for low pressure natural gas systems
  • Carry out routine service and maintenance procedures on low pressure natural gas systems (up to 35mm R1¼) to include natural gas fired central heating and hot water appliances (up to 70kW net heat input)
  • Perform fault finding, diagnosis and rectification procedures on low pressure natural gas systems
  • Decommission low pressure natural gas systems 

The training you will be getting

The apprenticeship training is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular college attendance. This training will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the Plumbing & Domestic Heating Technician L3 standard. On completion the apprentice will receive Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing & Domestic Heating qualification. Functional Skills in Maths and English may also be required depending on current level.

Things to consider

Where you will work: Various domestic projects local to wells and Glastonbury, occasional travel up to 30 minutes from our yard. Apprentices can be either picked up in Wells or from our yard in Fenny Castle. Additional college work will be required to attain the above grades at Maths and English if you don't already have them, these are needed to pass the course. We will still consider candidates who have not achieved the relevant grades at school as long as we are confident that they have the ability to pass with additional help at college. A driving licence is not essential for an apprentice but you will need to have attained this by the time you finish the apprenticeship in order to further your career. You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. In some cases, you may be required to have a telephone interview with Yeovil College prior to your application being passed on. If a suitable candidate is found prior to the advertised closing date, it may close earlier so please apply early to avoid disappointment.
