What you will do in your working day

The apprentice will support the planning, design, building, management, maintenance or dismantling of the built environment (such as buildings, structures, schools, offices, museums, hospitals).

 

The apprentice will be responsible for:

·         Supporting the production of technical engineering plans, designs, and documentation for building projects. 

·         Producing sketches, CAD drawings, 3D and BIM models in AutoCAD and Revit.

·         Developing an understanding of relevant quality standards and buildings regulations and in compliance with health, safety, and wellbeing requirements.

·         Complying with Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and other relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.

·         Downloading and printing drawings, correspondence, and other associated project documents.

·         Undertaking necessary electronic filing and archiving.

·         Using IT skills to assist with compiling reports.

·         Attending site visits to survey or inspect existing or new buildings.

·         Taking photographs and notes whilst on site.

·         Compiling site investigation reports.  Using MS Office to compile photographs and technical notes in line with professional standards (i.e. grammar, punctuation, consistency, layout) and as expected by our clients.

·         Attending client meetings under the supervision of the Senior Engineer(s).

 

Job duties will be expanded as expertise in design, analysis and project delivery grows.

 

The apprentice will be challenged to consider how they will support improvements to, or mitigate the effects of their work, on the environment, with structural engineering projects having to respond to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, climate change acts, and environmental policies and legislation, including net-zero emissions, and an increasing drive for sustainability.

 

The apprentice will contribute to the planning, design, programming, and delivery of engineering activities to agreed timescales and budgets, using quality systems and risk assessment procedures to monitor and manage projects and their risks. Technicians may also assist in site inspections or surveys, report progress against project plans, or check specified technical aspects of site activities.

The training you will be getting

  • Work towards a level 3 in Civil engineering technician Standard
  • 1 day a week day release at Middlesbrough college 

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • The apprentice will develop skills to work as a Structural Technician.  
  • Skills will be transferable to a range of employers.   Should they wish to progress as an Engineer they may wish to study towards HNC or Degree Apprenticeship. 
  • We encourage development towards BEng Civil Engineering and have previously supported apprentices through this route. 
  • As a multi-disciplinary consultancy there may be opportunity to gain exposure to a range of different engineering disciplines as well as Structural Engineering (Geotechnical, Civil and Infrastructure, Hydrology, Forensics, Facades and Transport Planning).
