What you will do in your working day
As a Plate Welder you will learn to weld a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, you will undertake range of different engineering activities aimed at developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours which meet the apprenticeship standard, whilst gaining valuable experience working in a busy workshop, on site and on maritime vessels / commercial workboats.

Specific activities could include:
During the Plate Welder Apprenticeship you will learn how to weld plate and structural components to high standards of quality. This will involve the fabrication, construction or repair of fabricated plate, assemblies and structural components which are often used to fabricate larger components and assemblies.
Welders will weld to internationally recognised quality standards using a range of welding processes including Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Metal Active Gas (MAG), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG).
Other activities:
- CAD Design
- Read and interpret detailed fabrication drawings.
- Operate electric hoists and carry out manual handling.
- Complete fabrication from profiles and castings.
- Mark off, plasma cut, burn, grind, drill and use templates / jigs during fabrication.
- Set out steel sections, assemble, tack weld in to position.
- Mark steel, stamp and self-inspect to ensure parts comply with BS EN standards.
- Complete job report cards & electronic job cards to document work completed.
- Assist with loading pallet.
The training you will be getting
Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard programme. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.
After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills; ultimately leading to your End Point Assessment.
SETA will make regular visits during this period of time to ensure you will be covering all the required aspects of the Standard, which includes a practical element, a theory test and a professional discussion, regarding the work achieved with your employer.
These final tests are administered by an independent assessment organisation and take place in the last six months of the apprenticeship.
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
For the right apprentice there will be opportunities to progress to being a team leader at a later date after the relevant experience has been gained.
