Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Focusing mainly on reception duties, you will also get the opportunity to work with our dispensary team (unpacking stock and handing out medication to patients) and our admin team (performing basic administration duties).
Within our reception team, you will learn how to deal with patient enquiries and requests for appointments on the telephone, via digital solutions and face to face at the reception desk.
There may be an opportunity to undertake some basic clinical duties such as testing urine samples and acting as a chaperone.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Use a range of questioning skills, including listening and responding in a way that builds rapport, determines customer needs and expectations and achieves positive engagement and delivery.
- Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, along with summarising language during face-to-face communications; and/or
- Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate communication skills, along with reinforcement techniques (to confirm understanding) during non-facing customer interactions.
- Depending on your job role and work environment: Use an appropriate ‘tone of voice’ in all communications, including written and digital, that reflect the organisation’s brand.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Math's (grade 4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
You must want to help patients and be prepared to work as part of a team. For a large part of the role, you will be using IT systems and contacting patients by telephone. Confidentiality is very important, and you must not share information outside of the practice. You must be prepared for patients to tell you very personal details.
About this employer
We are a small GP Practice with around 45 staff and 6000 patients many of which are older. During you lunch break you can take a 5 minute walk to the beach.
After this apprenticeship
On completion of one years’ service, if you are nearing completion of the qualification in customer service and the position is available, you may be offered a full-time role in the practice. Many of our previous apprentices have remained at the practice, now working as qualified receptionists, admin assistants, care coordinators or general practice assistants. Others have retrained to be a Health and Wellbeing coach within our clinical team.
