Summary
You will work in a busy vehicle workshop under supervision, providing regular service and safety inspections for HGV, light commercial vehicles, cars, grounds maintenance machinery and accessible buses. You will learn to diagnose faults and make any necessary repairs, as well as provide a prompt response to breakdowns when required.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Undertake all duties in compliance with relevant health & safety regulations in relation to the repair of vehicles, machines, plant equipment and the use of chemicals and tools
- Have due regard for the safety of other employees, members of the public and the customer in the delivery of the service
- Comply with the council's policies for the use and safekeeping of all workshop tools, equipment, workwear, work station and associated facilities
- Maintain the cleanliness of the working environment and ensure agreed procedures are followed in the workplace
- Alert to the proper use of vehicles, plant and equipment and ensure compliance with all safety-related aspects
- Learn to undertake the planned service and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, including diagnosing faults, recommending and undertaking cost-effective repairs, carrying out auto electrical repairs, welding fabrication and become competent to work safely and efficiently
- Assist the vehicle technicians by attending breakdowns and learn to undertake vehicle/equipment recoveries
- Learn to diagnose reactive vehicle, plant and tool defects and repair within the workplace in a timely manner as directed by the workshop supervisor

What you'll learn

- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
- Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
- Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
- Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
- Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
- Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
- Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
- Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
- Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
- Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
- Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
- Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
- Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Successful completion of this apprenticeship gives you:
- An accredited Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Light Vehicle Level 3 qualification
- Workplace learning
- Provided with a face-to-face 1:1 tutor

- Functional Skills in maths and English, if required

Desirable qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade C / 5 or above)
- Math (grade C / 5 or above)

Other requirements
You must be able to undertake physically demanding manual handling duties and tasks in both the workshop and when attending breakdowns and/or accidents out on the road. There will be times when you will have to work outside in all weathers and work outside normal office hours as the needs of the service require.
