Firebrand Training have an exciting new opportunity for an IT Technician Apprentice with Ark Schools, an education charity that provides IT support to Schools based in multiple locations in Birmingham. Primarily based at Ark St Albans Conybere Street Birmingham B12 0YH.

What you'll do at work

This role will have the opportunity to work with the school and the wider Ark IT team to provide excellent customer centric, proactive and reactive support to ensure the continuous availability of the IT equipment within the SLA’s and KPI’s as defined.

Duties and key responsibilities:

  • Assess incoming incidents and prioritise work according to timescales and processes
  • Keep accurate and timely records within the incident monitoring system, making sure that the end user receives feedback at all times on the progress of faults and changes
  • Carry out technical investigation support calls and escalate to the local technical team where Apprentice Requirements/Job Description issues require escalation
  • Maintain spare IT stock, warranties and software licences in accordance with the asset register Instigate hardware swap outs within the timescales set out by the available SLA to maintain service availability on failed devices
  • Arrange and repair (where required) equipment under the terms of the warranty agreement on specific hardware

  • Apply the appropriate tools and techniques to undertake fault finding and rectification

  • Communicate with all levels of stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress and managing escalation where appropriate
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, customers and other relevant stakeholders
  • Manage and prioritise the allocated workload effectively making best use of time and resources
  • Complete documentation relevant to the task and escalate where appropriate
  • Install or undertake basic software upgrades,either physically or remotely
  • Establish and diagnose the extent of the IT support task, in line with the organisation's policies and Service Level Agreements
  • Provide remote/F2F support to resolve customer requirements
  • Maintain a safe working environment for own personal safety and others in line with Health & Safety appropriate to the task
  • Identify and scope the best solution informed by the system data associated with the task
  • Test and evaluate the system's performance and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Escalate non routine problems in line with procedures
  • Use basic scripting to execute the relevant tasks for example PowerShell, Linux
  • Carry out routine maintenance across systems, (such as IT, Communications), ensuring organisational compliance at all times
  • Apply the necessary security, in line with access and/or encryption requirements
  • Use a range of Cabling or Connectors equipment in line with technical requirements for example physically or remotely
  • Test and evaluate network environments
  • Monitor performance and usage of a network
  • Deploy applications on a network
  • Set up storage and data access for staff
  • Apply necessary security measures, in line with access requirements to a network
  • Carry out routine maintenance across network systems, ensuring organisational compliance
  • Monitor network-related workloads including DNS and firewalls
  • Install or undertake basic upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish digital communication or telecommunications systems through, for example cabling and connecting equipment.
  • Identify a range of tools and or diagnostic equipment, for example, Hardware or Software components, to resolve Communications or Telecommunications requirements.
  • Undertake basic telecommunications activities, in response to an allocated task, designated responsibilities, instructions or customer’s requirements.

Firebrand’s sector-leading Level 3 Information Communication Technician (L3ICT) Apprenticeship Programme trains apprentices to deliver efficient operation and control of the IT and Telecommunications infrastructure and to deliver and support the information systems needs of an organisation. Options include pathways for Support Technician, Network Technician and Digital Communications Technician.

Key areas covered are: 

Support Technician:

  • Maintenance or repair of systems faults
  • Support for the roll-out of installation and commission of new systems or upgrades

Network Technician:

  • Installation and commission of networks
  • Maintenance or repair of network equipment
  • Installation, configuration or maintenance task on either ICT related hardware or software

Digital Communications Technician:

  • Installation and commission of telecoms networks
  • Maintenance or repair of telecoms network equipment
  • Installation, configuration or maintenance task on either ICT related hardware or software

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

5 GCSE's including English Language and Maths (grade (A*-C/9-4 or equivalent))

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
