Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assist in carrying out inspections relating to permitted works and NRSWA functions as may be required and any non-conformances identified are followed up, and the necessary charge applied, and evidence recorded.
  • To attend site meetings with a member of the Permit Team
  • Shadow a member of the team to carry out site inspections where sites are still live due to no closing notice or where work have overrun duration times.
  • Take photographic evidence of any defects found.
  • To assist with defective reinstatements, ensuring photographic evidence is available, and the necessary charge has been applied.
  • To assist in the co-ordination of the team’s activities with all other internal departments and neighbouring highway authorities in order to meet cross-boundary Network Management duties.
  • To support as requested in the event of any emergency on the highway such as subsidence and floods, which may include road closures or diversionary routes. 
  • To assist with the process and issue applications for Highway Licenses, including road-opening licences, A Boards, skips, scaffolds and temporary traffic control etc.
  • To establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external work promoters.

  • Conduct thorough investigations of non-compliance and allegations of non-compliance
  • Take actions to deal with non- compliance using a wide range of interventions including advice and guidance, formal letters and notices. Where necessary impose sanctions
  • Provide appropriate support for those adversely affected by non-compliance
  • Having sound judgement. This includes making decisions about the relevance, quality and accuracy of the information available and using and sharing it appropriately
  • Monitor and report on their activities and performance
  • Evaluate their activities in relation to their regulatory objectives and their organisations strategic priorities
  • Use IT systems to manage, share and store information in accordance with data protection requirements where appropriate
  • Use digital technologies to communicate with and support partner organisations and regulated entities
  • Use digital competencies to support the regulation of online markets

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

5 subjects including English and Maths (grade A-C/4 or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
