What you'll do at work

As a Pharmacy Services Assistant Apprentice, you’ll be working in a small but busy community pharmacy. You’ll support the pharmacist and wider team in providing excellent customer service, safe handling of medicines, and smooth running of the pharmacy. This is a varied role where no two days are the same but you’ll be trained to develop your skills and confidence.

Main duties will include:

  • Greeting and assisting customers at the counter with advice and service.
  • Supporting the sale of over-the-counter medicines under pharmacist supervision.
  • Receiving prescriptions, checking details, and preparing items for collection.
  • Assisting the pharmacist in the safe dispensing of medication.
  • Ordering, receiving, and storing pharmaceutical stock correctly.
  • Monitoring stock levels, replenishing shelves, and ensuring sales areas are clean and presentable.
  • Learning how to use pharmacy IT systems for stock control, prescriptions, and record keeping.
  • Processing customer payments, handling cash and card transactions.
  • Supporting the pharmacist with health campaigns and promoting services such as flu vaccinations or smoking cessation advice.
  • Maintaining high standards of customer care by offering a friendly, professional, and helpful service.
  • Following health and safety guidelines, infection control, and pharmacy procedures at all times.
  • Developing specialist knowledge of pharmacy products and services.
  • Completing compulsory training and assessments as part of your apprenticeship.
  • Carrying out general housekeeping tasks to keep the pharmacy safe and tidy.
  • Assisting the team with other reasonable duties as required to support the smooth running of the pharmacy.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • receive and log prescriptions
  • assemble prescribed items, undertake an in-process accuracy check and issue prescribed items
  • work according to legislative requirements, and organisational policies
  • order, receive, maintain and issue pharmaceutical stock
  • provide appropriate advice when authorised on supplied medicines and products, their storage and disposal
  • work within the parameters of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the pharmacy
  • act in accordance with systems and organisational governance
  • recognise and act within the pharmacy regulatory, legal and ethical standards
  • support the team in the development of others
  • maintain and further develop your own skills and knowledge through development activities; maintain evidence of your personal development and actively prepare for and participate in appraisal
  • communicate effectively with the public, carers and other health and social care professionals using a range of techniques to determine their needs, and keep information confidential
  • handle information (record, report and store information) related to individuals and/or patients in line with local and national policies
  • use pharmacy IT systems and other IT resources according to legislative requirements and organisational policies
  • demonstrate person centred care and support within a pharmacy setting
  • make pharmacy patients and patient safety your first concern
  • use judgement and refer service user as appropriate to another member of the team, GP, healthcare worker, manufacturer etc
  • maintain the interests of patients and the health of the public
  • promote and advocate equality, diversity and inclusion

  • work safely within the parameters of your role using Standard Operating Procedures

Training schedule

This apprenticeship is work-based learning, which means you’ll be based in the pharmacy and won’t need to attend college. Instead, you’ll be given paid time per week known as off-the-job training during your working week to complete apprenticeship tasks and build your knowledge.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

English & Maths (grade 3 or D or equivalent)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
