Summary

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice Fire and Security Maintenance Engineer at Pyrocel. Opportunity to progress within the company for the right candidate who is enthusiastic and keen to learn new skills. The aim is to be confident and competent enough to be out on their own completing their allocated work to the highest standard.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The apprentice role will involve maintaining, installing and repairing fire alarms and detection, Security, Access and CCTV systems. 

Duties include: 

  • Attending pre-arranged maintenance visits alongside a qualified engineer.
  • Testing/Maintaining systems and completing relevant reports to ensure Pyrocel and its customers remain compliant.
  • Reporting any variations from safety standards BS5839 and BS5266.
  • Fault-finding on systems.
  • Reporting any defects found and repair where possible unless otherwise stated by the customer. 
  • Relay all appointments to office administrators for diary entry by email on a weekly basis. 
  • Check false alarm rates and advise clients on how to reduce this. 
  • Participating in out-of-hours call-outs on a rota system on completion of apprenticeship.
  • Use of hand tools, laptops and testing equipment on site. 
  • Adhering to all health and safety regulations. 
  • Liaising with customers and fellow employees to enable efficient and compliant site visits.

These duties are not exhaustive and other tasks will be required from time to time.

What you'll learn

  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
  • Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
  • Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
  • Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
  • Carries out risk assessments.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
  • Plan and install systems cabling.

Training schedule

The successful applicant will work towards the Fire, Emergency & Security Systems Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard.

Will be required to attend day release at Access Training on Team Valley, Gateshead (this may be 1 day per week or 1 day per fortnight dependent upon the phase of the course you are in).

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

Electrical Engineering (grade 4)

Other requirements

Apprentices will often be given some of the more basic tasks, such as panel watching, but these are vital for the type of work this job role entails. We try to keep this to a minimum where possible and applicants will be exposed to different disciplines within the company to ensure they get varied training throughout. Please note you may be required to work at height or in small spaces due to the nature of this work. Appropriate training is provided in these instances. Applicants should be willing to attend day release at Team Valley, Gateshead (one day per week/fortnight). Applicants will be working with other engineers day to day and will mainly be site-based, often travelling to multiple sites in one day. Where possible, the applicant will be collected/dropped off from their home. However, there may be times when the applicant has to travel to an agreed meeting point. The applicants should be able to drive, have their own vehicle, and be willing to get to the first site/ meeting point of the day when home pick-up is not possible. An interest, background or prior qualification in an electrical discipline would be advantageous. A 6-month probationary period applies. DBS check and possible BS7858 screening is required.

After this apprenticeship

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, the candidate will be tasked with going out by themselves and expected to be a fully-fledged engineer in their own right. Engineers will be planning and carrying out their own work to the highest standard. Continued development will be provided in terms of manufacturer training and any other courses deemed required for the role.

The role will most likely develop with multiple paths available in terms of maintenance, installation, commissioning etc.
