Summary
Blaby District Council is seeking an Apprentice Vehicle Technician to join our workshop. No experience needed—just passion and drive. You’ll train alongside skilled technicians, gaining hands-on experience inspecting, servicing, maintaining, and repairing our modern, diverse fleet.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- To assist with scheduled maintenance and repairs on vehicles, plant and machinery as required by the Team Leader (Transport Services)
- To learn how to diagnose vehicle issues and discuss findings with colleagues and the Supervisor
- To work as part of a team to help provide a repair and maintenance service for all fleet vehicles, plant and machinery
- To accompany existing workshop staff to vehicle and equipment breakdowns as and when necessary
- To help repair and maintain the Council’s vehicles in accordance with the planned servicing schedule, guidance from the Vehicle Technicians if required or as directed by the Team Leader
- To assist the Transport Services Team in achieving targets and goals as required
- To comply with all internal and external safety policy and to always work in a safe manner both individually and as a team
- Be prepared to undertake internal or external training to help meet the standards required by the Team Leader (Transport Services)
- Ensure workshop equipment and facilities are kept clean, safe and well maintained
- Work in a positive and collaborative manner within the Fleet Services and Neighbourhood Services Team

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

- You will spend approximately 80% of your time based at the council depot in Whetstone together with 20% on off the job training at Loughborough College Group – Stephenson’s College
- You must be able to travel to both sites
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade C/4 or above)
- Maths (grade C/4 or above)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
Maths and English Functional Skills Level 2 or an equivalent qualification. (Qualification attainment in a scheduled timescale may be acceptable). Minimum provisional driving licence. A curious mind and a can-do attitude. Good communication skills. A willingness to learn, laugh, and lift heavy stuff!
