Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Your duties would include, but are not restricted to:

  • Support pupils in Key Stage 1 using specialist skills and knowledge
  • Assist with EHCPs and individual learning plans
  • Build positive relationships and promote inclusion
  • Encourage cooperation, independence, and celebrate achievements
  • Provide feedback on pupil progress and behaviour
  • Support teachers with planning, delivery, and assessment
  • Maintain records and contribute to pupil reviews
  • Help with marking, classroom organisation, and behaviour management
  • Communicate effectively with parents/carers as directed
  • Administer routine tests and provide general admin support
  • Deliver learning activities and support curriculum strategies
  • Promote ICT use and help pupils access learning
  • Prepare and maintain resources and equipment
  • Uphold safeguarding, equality, and school policies
  • Supervise pupils during non-lesson times as required

Training schedule

You will be completing the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard with Darlington Borough Council Learning & Skills. This programme equips you with the essential skills to support teaching and learning in a school setting. Training is delivered through a blend of online learning and expert-led sessions, covering key topics such as child development, safeguarding, and supporting learning activities.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you’ll be supported by experienced tutors who have worked in educational settings and understand the practical skills needed to thrive as a Teaching Assistant. You’ll gain valuable experience in the classroom, starting in Key Stage 1, while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Training will be provided to achieve the following qualifications:

Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard

Drop-in training sessions will be take place weekly, at Darlington Borough Council Learning & Skills training centre (DL1 4QZ).  Here you will develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to ensure these exceed the minimum requirements for the Teaching Assistant Level 3 apprenticeship standards.

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4+/ C+)
  • maths (grade 4+/ C+)

Other requirements

The position would be subject to passing a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. You may be required to attend our training centre in Darlington (DL1 4QZ) and you will need to make your own way there for drop-in sessions.
