Summary

You will complete every aspect of painting a vehicle from paint preparation, through to painting, polishing. The role of an Apprentice Paint Technician includes Mixing different paint and materials Matching colours, An awareness of different paint systems, paint equipment, special effect paints.

£17,667 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Apply body filler & foundation materials
  • Prepare all types of vehicle body material
  • Prepare & refinish metal, plastic and pre-painted surfaces
  • Repair minor defects in all types of body panels and materials
  • Apply paint, primer and basecoat
  • Apply topcoats and clear coats and complete final refinishing operations
  • Identify and rectify paint or preparation defects
  • Utilise modern drying and curing techniques such as Ultraviolet (UV), Infrared and catalytic solutions used in the refinishing industry

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Ability to undertake appropriate job preparation prior to commencing repair e.g. substrate surface preparation, paint volume calculation etc
  • Ability to correctly identify the substrate materials to be refinished e.g. plastic, steel, aluminium etc
  • Ability to interpret relevant technical data and methods to create paint manufactures specified application
  • Ability to use refinishing materials following paint manufacturer specifications to reinstate vehicle finish back to high quality
  • Ability to identify and operate the correct repair tools, equipment and devices used in the process e.g mixing systems, paint booths, UV lamps and spray equipment

Training schedule

Our expert trainers will guide you through the training programme using a combination of on-site, e-learning, and practical application.

In the workplace, your personal, dedicated mentor will support your continued learning as you apply the skills and knowledge you have gained.

This is a fully rounded training experience where you will build life skills that last and gain Apprenticeship qualifications.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4 or C Grade/Level 2 or above)
  • Math (grade 4/C or above)

Other in:

ICT (or other subject) (grade 4/C or above)
