Summary

Looe Pharmacy is looking for an apprentice to work, study and gain the apprenticeship Pharmacy Technician qualification over the next 2 years. Successful completion of the GPhC accredited Pharmacy Technician course will lead to the ability to register as a professional Pharmacy Technician.

£15,704 to £25,396.80, depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The job will involve:

  • Working in the dispensary- preparing and dispensing medicines
  • Working in the pharmacy retail area- serving at the counter and providing general pharmaceutical healthcare advice

This role will also provide clinical services, after specific training is undertaken, such as becoming a vaccinator.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Recognise and work within their scope of practice and skills,
  • Use relevant data and information to make effective decisions
  • Accurately retrieve and reconcile information about a person’s medicines
  • Accurately assemble prescribed items
  • Issue prescribed items safely and effectively and take action to deal with discrepancies carry out an accuracy check of dispensed medicines and products
  • Accurately perform pharmaceutical calculations to ensure the safety of people
  • Apply the principles of clinical governance and ensure person’s confidentiality
  • Assess a person’s present supply of medicines and order appropriate medicines and products.
  • Receive requests for medicines, including prescriptions, and check for their validity, safety and clarity, taking action to deal with any problems with the person directly
  • Demonstrate operational skills within their scope of practice
  • Provide a safe, effective and responsive pharmacy service
  • Take personal responsibility for the legal, safe and efficient supply of medicines
  • Apply the principles of governance to pharmacy operational processes
  • Ensure the confidentiality of patient data.
  • Communicate and work effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Explain the impact of audit and evaluation on the quality of pharmacy operations and services
  • Engage others in the improvement of processes and systems
  • Effectively use systems to support the safe and effective management and supply of medicines
  • Listen to a person, understand their needs and interpret what matters to them.
  • Give the person all relevant information and advice in a way they can understand, so they can make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing
  • Optimise a person’s medicines to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Training schedule

The training course is a distance learning course with regular contact with your course tutor.

There is one day of paid study leave a week which can be done at home or in the pharmacy (if required) to enable completion of the course tasks and requirements.

Candidates must have:

  • Must have a right to work and abode in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years
  • Additional eligibility rules apply to EEA nationals and non-UK nationals
  • Must be aged 16 years old or above
  • Must hold a contract of employment for a minimum of 21 hours a week
  • Must work under the supervision of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician for the duration of the apprenticeship
  • Must work alongside a pharmacy registrant for a minimum of 14 hours per week
  • Must meet the pre-screening criteria in relation to: health and character, current ability and current level of maths, English and science knowledge
  • Cannot be in full time education or enrolled onto another government funded programme
  • Cannot hold an equivalent qualification at the same level
  • Cannot hold a level 4 qualification or above, unless the qualification is "materially different" from the apprenticeship
  • Queries in relation to prior qualifications will be individually assessed by our specialist tutors

Other requirements

A requirement that the successful applicant passes a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. All learners are required to undertake the following: Initial assessment in science, maths and English during the enrolment process Functional Skills in Maths and English at level 2 as a mandatory part of this programme, unless acceptable exemption evidence is provided during the enrolment process Additional foundation learning in science / maths / English depending on the outcome of the initial assessment. It is a requirement of the NVQ Level 3 to meet this academic level by the end of the course.
