Summary

To work with and supervise individuals and groups of children with significant Special Educational Needs under the direction/instruction of teaching and/or senior staff, inclusive of specific individual learning needs, enabling access to learning for all pupils and assistance and support in classroom.

£15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Establish good working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high
    expectations
  • Provide consistent support to all pupils, responding appropriately to individual pupil needs
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans
  • Promote inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.
  • Promote self-esteem and independence, employing strategies to recognise and reward achievement within established school procedure
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under the guidance
    and direction of the teacher
  • Use specialist (curricular / learning) skills / training / experience to support pupils
  • Provide additional support for individual pupils enabling them to maintain their access to
    learning, this will include personal care, pastoral support, facilitating use of specialist equipment etc Provide additional support for individual pupils enabling them to maintain

After completing a Teaching Assistant apprenticeship, you will be well-positioned to progress in your education and career. Possible career pathways include:

  • Experienced Teaching Assistant / Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – Take on more responsibility, such as leading small group interventions or covering classes.
  • Special Educational Needs (SEN) Support – Specialise in supporting pupils with additional learning needs.
  • Learning Mentor or Pastoral Support Roles – Provide emotional and behavioural support to students.
  • Teacher Training – With further study (such as a degree and QTS), you could progress to becoming a qualified teacher.
