An apprentice aged 17 would be entitled to £7.55 an hour. If you're 19 or over & in your first year of an apprenticeship, you're entitled to £7.55 an hour. After your first year, you would be entitled to the National Minimum Wage for your age group.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As an Apprentice Fabricator/Welder at Transcal Engineering Ltd, you will become an essential part of our fabrication team. You will work in a modern engineering facility on real-world projects, helping to deliver components to major UK defence and rail customers.

Your day-to-day duties will include:

  • Reading engineering drawings to prepare and position metal components for welding
  • Learning MIG/MAG/TIG welding techniques to assemble structures to exact specifications
  • Using hand and power tools, grinders, and cutting equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Performing weld quality checks and supporting the inspection process with trained personnel
  • You’ll be supported throughout by experienced mentors and our Responsible Welding Coordinator, learning to meet industry standards such as ISO 3834-2, EN 15085-2 and DIN2303

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.

  • Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
  • Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

Training schedule

Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Hereford (HR4 9SX) / HWGTA located in Worcester (WR4 9GN):

Level 3 comprises of:

  • Duration approximately 40-45 months
  • Years 1/2 is a combination of off the job training at HWGTA Training Centre as well as training on site with your employer. This includes 29-42 weeks within the training Centre plus 1 day per week in a classroom setting to cover practical and theory aspects and complete EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge
  • Years 3/4 based full time in company developing skills in preparation for the end point assessment to gain your Metal Fabricator Level 3 qualification
  • Additional training for functional skills in English and maths will be undertaken if needed

There is also a five-day teambuilding residential trip that is held in the spring of each year offered to all apprentices on programme

Other requirements

Our Pershore facility is accessible via public transport (Pershore Train station 0.4 miles away). This is a hands-on role in a workshop environment – safety and attention to detail are vital.
