Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Carry out quantity take-offs to support estimating, valuation, and cost control activities.
  • Assist in preparing monthly payment applications and commercial reports.
  • Support subcontractor procurement, including issuing enquiries and evaluating quotations.
  • Help administer subcontract accounts, including payments, change management, and record-keeping.
  • Contribute to the assessment and pricing of variations and compensation events.
  • Assist with contract administration and resolution of contractual matters and claims.
  • Attend site visits and meetings to understand project progress and MEP installation challenges.
  • Use industry-standard software to support measurement, analysis, and reporting tasks.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Be able to apply and evaluate the principles for the avoidance of conflict and dispute resolution such as adjudication and arbitration between project stakeholders
  • Be able to identify and manage risks of health, safety and welfare in line with legislation, hazards and safe systems of work
  • Analyse costs and benefits of sustainability initiatives on a project
  • Be able to advise on the legal aspects of a project and the most suitable form of contract to be used to ensure fairness and efficiency
  • Be able to advise on the most suitable construction solutions that maximise value for clients and enhance the cost effectiveness of the project within the budget constraints
  • Be able to advise on the appropriateness of various procurement routes and manage and report on the tendering and negotiation processes to select specialist contractors
  • Advise on appropriate methods of measurement of completed works and issue documentation required for payment to specialist contractors and income from client
  • Advise construction team and the client on strategies to control predicted expenditure in line with the budget
  • Carry out risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate risk
  • Monitor, report and advise construction team on project cashflows and profitability. Evaluate and advise on financial implications of decisions during the construction phase
  • Assess, interpret and report on progress and assist in the control of programmes during the construction phase

Training schedule

The apprentice will undertake academic training on a day-release basis, attending in person at either Nottingham Trent University or Sheffield Hallam University, depending on course availability.

Requirements

Desirable qualifications

BTEC in:

Construction /Built Environment or Quantity Survey (grade Pass)

Other in:

Electrician or Plumbing or Mechanical Pipe Fitting (grade Pass)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

The projects we undertake will require DBS checks for secutity purposes. You will also need to be flexable as we work nationwide so you will be expetced to travel for business and where necessary this may require overnight business trips.

After this apprenticeship

Once qualigfied you will progress to being a Project Quantity Surveyor, with a clear pathway to Senior QS, Commercial Manager, and Chartered MEP Surveyor status. We will support your progression to chartered staus via the RICS.
