Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • The role of Trainee ME (Engineering Design Support / CMM PC DMIS Programmer) is to gain all knowledge and training to support the ME Planning Dept as the final gate to Model / Drawing verifications prior to manufacturing and support rectifications where required. 
  • Learn to Create CMM programmes for NPI and Legacy improvements (utilising PC DMIS), whilst also supporting CMM failures by delving into and analysing results to support manufacturing. 
  • Active Physical inspection and verification on machining Centres where required to support Production teams / Operators as part of the ME Product Support team. 
  • Prove out of New / Modified Programs to be Led by Process owner (assemble of Fixtures and all associated paperwork included) 
  • The role will involve shopfloor support (once trained, but support is on hand) as and when issues occur. When an employee has a problem with a part / program, they will handover to the CMM apprentice who will resolve the issue and complete the manufacture of the part to ensure no defects occur.

What you'll learn

  • Foundation Stage: Complying with statutory regulations and stringent organisational safety requirements
  • Foundation Stage: Producing components using hand fitting, fabrication and joining techniques
  • Foundation Stage: Producing Computer Aided Design (CAD) models (drawings) using a CAD system
  • Foundation Stage: Preparing and using lathes, milling and other general or specialist machines and high tech equipment
  • Foundation Stage: Preparing and proving Computer Numeric Control programmes
  • Foundation Stage: Using computer software packages to assist with and evaluate engineering activities
  • Foundation Stage: Producing and managing engineering project plans
  • Foundation Stage: Producing assemblies using a wide range of materials and techniques
  • Development Team: Project management and scheduling engineering activities
  • Development Team: Securing appropriate resources and managing budgets and resources
  • Development Team: Implementing, monitoring and evaluating engineering processes

Training schedule

The role will be based fully onsite at the Heroux-Devtek address below, except for one-day a week which will be studying onsite at the University of Derby. You will be working towards a Level 6 Manufacturing Engineer (degree) apprenticeship standard, which will include any necessary Functional Skills training or supplementary qualifications.

A Level in:

Maths (grade C)
