Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Through education and training learn to correctly set and operate manual machines, such as Bridgeport Milling machine, Ward and DSG Lathe
- Become competent and self-sufficient to run, set and troubleshoot the Waterjet
- Gain experience and complete external legislative training in the setting and operating of power presses
- Demonstrate capability of working with stainless steel, brass, aluminium, and titanium; (thicknesses as low as 0.025mm (0.001”) up to 6.35mm (1/4”) thickness)
- Work to tight tolerances such as our standard shim tolerances are +/-0.005” (+/-0.127mm). This could be as tight as +/-0.0004” (+/-0.010mm) in some instances
- Acquire knowledge of turning laminated washer diameters to -0.005” (-0.127mm) on manual lathes
- Work to engineering drawings, with an ability to work to imperial and metric dimensions
- Prove aptitude in using verniers, micrometres and bore gauges to ensure compliance to drawing through the manufacturing process
- Support the Shim Section team in maintaining a clean, tidy and safe working environment
- Assisting with working to a production plan, whilst considering setting and planning efficiencies

Training schedule
This programme is delivered via a day release delivery model which means that one day per week, your attendance is required at our Engineering Campus (NG17). This attendance is required during term time only.
You will work with expert assessors and tutors to develop new knowledge, skills and behaviours within the profession.
You will experience a blended learning model.
